It's time for gas tax reform.

Australia's gas belongs to all of us.

Right now, the government collects just six cents in every dollar of oil and gas revenue. That has to change.

Labor's national conference starts Thursday July 26th and gas tax is on the table. This is the time to keep the pressure on to get this over the line.

The Problem

We deserve a fair return.

Australia is one of the world's largest LNG exporters. Yet Australia collects just 30% of profit on average as tax revenue, compared with 75-90% for most other fossil fuel exporters around the world.

Labor's national conference begins this Thursday and we know that gas tax reform is finally on the agenda. This is the moment to make your voice heard.

I am writing to urge you to support a fairer return on Australia's gas and natural resources - and to make sure that commitment becomes law.
Australia's gas belongs to all of us. It is our shared national inheritance. But for too long, the return to the Australian people has fallen far short of what we deserve - and far short of what comparable resource-rich nations collect.
I am encouraged that this issue is gaining momentum across the political spectrum, so that now Labor Party members propose enshrining this principle in the party platform.
But I want to be clear: a platform commitment is not enough. The Labor Party in government.  They have the power to act. Australians do not want to see this just debated at conferences - we want to see it legislated.
Gas reserves are finite. The window for reform is now. Every day without action is another day our gas leaves this country without an adequate return to the people it belongs to.
I urge you to support legislation that ensures Australians get a fair return on our natural resources.

How we got here

Gas tax reform is massively overdue.

Australia's gas resources have generated enormous wealth - but Australians are not sharing in it. The Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT) was designed in 1987 with oil, not gas, in mind. Its structural flaws have been identified repeatedly, yet never adequately addressed.

Independent MP Allegra Spender has made a formal submission to the Senate Select Committee on the Taxation of Gas Resources, proposing a progressive price-linked royalty on LNG exports with a volume-based floor - a model proven in Queensland to be adequate, simple, fair and politically durable.
